Should STEM become STEAM? via The Atlantic

Recently in a video The Atlantic asked a group of academics within some of America’s top universities to debate how STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) could benefit from another letter. “I have no hesitation in saying we need to add the letter A,” says Harvard University education professor Howard Gardner. “An education devoid of arts…is an empty, half-brain kind of education.” Other panelists include Sebastian Thrun, Drew Faust, Erika Christakis, and Nicholas Dirks. Thanks to students Jake, Nick, Jesus and William as well as teacher Ed Hernandez at Tustin High School for joining us on our latest podcast.  The team comes from the runners up finalist in UC Irvine’s Energy Invitational, on the show to talk about building the Chassis Lab Switch electric car that they are assembling during the school year. Tustin High shared their ongoing projects with us, which includes the Racer8 electric go kart, a Shop Bot, hovercraft, dunk tank and several others.  They also talked about what it’s like to be involved in high school engineering class, what they like most about it, their roles and what’s difficult.  In addition to getting a hands-on education, students also learn about design using software like Solid Works.
