Intel, Siemens Help Kildare, Ireland Student Electric Car Team

NUI Maynooth with funding from global chip giant Intel will field the first team from the Republic of Ireland to enter the international IET Formula 24 challenge from the Greenpower Education Trust. Their first race will take place on 31st of May at Nutt’s Corner Circuit in Northern Ireland against five other new teams vying for a grid position at the final to be held in October 2014 at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in Sussex. Intel announced the partnership with the National University of Ireland on its website February 19.

Greenpower, an educational trust sponsored by multinational engineering conglomerate Siemens, was setup in the UK with the objective of encouraging education in the subjects of sustainable engineering and technology to young people.

Ireland seeks to increase the adoption of electric cars.  A network of electric car charging points has been installed across the country and the government is offering  grants towards the purchase of electric vehicles for domestic and commercial use. Read More
