Maker Faire 2013
The Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth will be held on May 18 and 19 at the San Mateo County Event Center. Faire goers will come to explore, engage, learn, and get their make on with over 900 makers, 12 stages with over 300 presentations, and much more. Don’t miss on the scheduled EV activities this year.
The Switch EV, a 3-wheeled electric car that you can assemble yourself, will be on display in the the West Lot Car Row Booth WL24. Peter Oliver from Switch will be attending education day on Friday, May 17 to give students and teachers a sneak peek of Maker Faire. As Maker Faire is being set up, students will have an opportunity to engage with individual Makers, take part in collaborative, hands-on projects and activities, and watch live performances and demos.
Toyota, a Maker Faire Bay Area 2013 Goldsmith Sponsor, is bringing the Power Racing event to life. The Power Racing series features small teams from all over the country that create working electric vehicles and race them on a specially designed track. Toyota will also host the following activities to further connect with people who share enthusiasm for do-it-yourself and engineering projects, technology and innovation:
- RAV4 EV: The 2013 Toyota RAV4 EV will be on display, giving attendees the chance to check out the world’s first electric crossover SUV.
- Bike-Powered Slot Car Track: Toyota will offer attendees the opportunity to compete for prizes while challenging friends to a race on a custom-built, bicycle-powered electric slot car track. As one person controls the slot car, another generates energy by cycling as fast as he or she can.
- The Maker Lounge: Toyota will provide a comfortable lounge space, complete with Wi-Fi and power outlets. RAV4 EV Executive Program Manager Sheldon Brown will be available to answer questions about the RAV4 EV. Attendees will have exclusive access to Sheldon Brown to learn about the development of the RAV4 EV and ask technical questions about this innovative vehicle.
In Search of the ‘Killer App’ for Electric Cars
On Saturday at 11:00 AM on the Make: Live Stage, Dr. Valery Miftakhov is scheduled to share his thoughts on how the electric Car market is in desperate need of a “Killer App.” Without it, EVs might not be able to graduate from their current status as a niche product. He reviews the progress his group of EV enthusiasts (dubbed “EMW”, or Electric Motor Werks) have made against the three major areas with a potential for being killer apps: Electric Car Conversions, Universal Range Extenders and Mobile Fast Charging.
